The Khuri sand dunes are in the outskirts of Jaisalmer, approximately 40 K.M. To the southwest of the main town. Khuri is a tiny and beautiful village with far fewer residents and yet its own majestic beauty. Khuri is renowned for the beauty of the desert, here you can experience the traditional lifestyle and the folklore of Rajastani at its finest. There’s enough sand dunes here to leave you awestruck. The scattered mud houses and the locals’ simple living will give you the best glimpse of native Rajasthan in Rajput Land.
The camel rides take you to its incredible heights as you get a closer glimpse of the straw roofs, narrow streets, other camels and the vibrant local bazaar. Here, the tourists often arrange campfires and listen to ‘Kalbeliyas‘ music.
The Khuri sand dunes are still very unexplored. The best time to visit Khuri sand dunes is from October to March, as it is too hot in summer. The best things to do in Khuri are desert safari, explore the sand dunes and visit the sand dunes of Sam.

Desert in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is one of the best cities in all of Rajasthan’s Thar desert state. You can find vast desert land here, as well as two famous desert dunes of Sam sand dunes and Khuri Sand dunes.
Both Sam & Khuri have 30-60 meter high sand dunes that attract travelers from all over India , especially from Gujarat
In addition to these 2 dune sites, Jaisalmer is a range of popular tourist attractions and its Golden Fort, also known as Sonar Quila, is a must-see attractions, along with many other sites such as Gadisar Lake, Amar Sagar, Jaisalmer War Museum, etc Sand Dunes Rajasthan.
Sam Sand Dunes (Jaisalmer)
Jaisalmer, is Thar Rajasthan ‘s best desert destination & the dunes here, Sam sand dune & Khuri sand dune, are very popular with travelers visiting Jaisalmer.
Sam is about 45 km from Jaisalmer city & dunes here you can find 30-60 meter high sand dunes in a desert area of 3-5 km with very little vegetation.
Sam’s main area, which has no trees; just sand dunes, is the ideal spot for travelers looking for an authentic Rajasthan desert holiday Sand Dunes Rajasthan.
How to reach Sam sand dune?
You have to book a Jaisalmer to Sam taxi to reach here, which costs about Rs 1500-2000 (round trip) and takes about 40-50 minutes Sand Dunes Rajasthan.
Khuri Sand Dunes (Jaisalmer)
33 km south of Sam sand dune & 45 km from Jaisalmer city, you will find another famous sand dune area known as Khuri Sand dunes.
Khuri is a popular safari village destination in Jaisalmer, where tourists tend to stay in small homes and enjoy less crowded sand dunes walks.
How to reach Khuri sand dune?
You need to hire a taxi from Jaisalmer & drive to Khuri, which is located 50 km southwest of town.
You can also plan a trip like:
Arrive in Sam in day 1 around 3-4 pm
Enjoy & explore Sam & stay here for a night, at one of many desert camps
Next day, arrive at Khuri, 45 minute drive from Sam, just before sunrise.
And with the plan mentioned above you can visit both Sam & Khuri sand dunes.
There’s no question that Khuri sand dunes are less crowded with visitors but it’s this remote place that makes visiting Khuri such a temptation.
Desert in Jodhpur
Jodhpur is 260 km east from Jaisalmer and is one of three top prominent desert region in Thar Desert. Though most region of jodhpur district has green vegetation, but you will find one marvel, that is now rated as perfect desert in Jodhpur Jaisalmer. Osian desert (Jodhpur)
Osian Desert is very similar to Jodhpur, about 70 km away, and is famous for two temples (Osian Mata Temple & a Jain Temple) along with the sand dunes.
Only a handful of desert camps can be found at Osian sand dunes, along with a few camel & jeep safari tour operators. These dunes are often visited by travelers in Jodhpur who want to experience authentic desert safari activities such as Jeep Safari, Camel Safari etc.
Osian ‘s remote surroundings make it a perfect attraction for a quiet night’s stay (in desert camps) as this dune area is less crowded than Jaisalmer ‘s Sam Sand Dunes.
Desert in Barmer
Around 160 km south of Jaisalmer is the town of Barmer which is classified as Rajasthan ‘s 2nd desert town (Jaisalmer being 1st) where you’ll find a vast desert area. So the area with the most prominent desert here is:
Mahabar desert
The third town in western Rajasthan that is popular in Barmer for its sand dunes location. And you’ll find Mahabar Sand Dunes just a 15 minute drive from Barmer.
Mahabar Sand Dunes is a small but very beautiful desert area where you won’t find desert camps or safari tours, but it’s ideal for travelers who want to either drive their own SUV or bike on dunes and for travellers who are driving on Jaisalmer Ahmedabad route, as Mahabar Sand Dunes are on route.
Desert in Nagaur
Nagaur is both Jodhpur & Jaisalmer situated in central Rajasthan & nearby. While Nagaur is mostly known for its cattle farms, you will find a village called Khimsar if you travel 45 km south of Nagaur City. Tap here to find:
Khimsar desert Sand Dunes
Khimsar is a small town in the central rajasthan between Jaipur and Jodhpur, just 45 km from the nearest railway station in Nagaur district.
So once you reach Khimsar area, you will first find a large solar panel unit from Reliance & a sand dune resort, which is the “Khimsar Sand Dune resort” main attraction.
Unlike the above-mentioned desert dune site, Khimsar is very remote and most travelers visiting Khimsar are the guests of this resort who have maintained a dune area with village theme huts and give camel rides in a dune area that they maintain, as seen in the picture above.
Khimsar’s surrounding area is a flat desert area but it is full of rich wildlife such as Desert Fox, Nigai, Blackbucks, Demoiselle Cranes, Partridges and other species in wildlife sanctuaries around the world.
Desert in Bikaner
Bikaner is a popular tourist town in the middle of the Thar Desert & in western Sand Dunes Rajasthan, famous for its Junagarh Palace, Karni Mata Temple (where more than 25,000 rats are to be found) and the desert area just outside the town.
As every other desert in Sand Dunes Rajasthan, Bikaner has a few sand dune areas that aren’t very large, but are spread over a wide area and are well-known for their camel safari and camping.

Desert in Pushkar
Pushkar is one of the holiest towns for Rajasthan’s Hindus & a major tourist destination surrounded by desert sands.
The Sand Dunes Rajasthan here are not as impressive as those around the Jaisalmer Sam sand dunes, but they are ranked as the best places to explore the rural village in Rajasthan.
Here, you can go on a camel ride, or travel around in a camel cart to explore unknown Thar Desert regions. The camel’s caretaker will be your guide & share with you interesting information on the villages.
