Though outwardly invincible, the fort has four gates approached by a winding road. There are several beautiful palaces inside the city, with beautifully carved walls, latticed windows and evocative names. Such palaces house a splendid array of Indian royalty trappings including a magnificent palanquin set, elephant howdahs, miniature school paintings, musical instruments, costumes, and furniture.
Jaswant Thada : A cluster of white marble royal cenotaphs erected in 1899 A.D. In memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. Portraits of various Jodhpur rulers are within the central cenotaph.
Umaid Bhawan Palace : The only palace constructed in the 20th century under the famine relief project that gave hunger-struck population jobs. In 16 years the palace was complete. This opulent sandstone edifice is now the former rulers’ residence with part of it serving as a hotel and part remaining as a museum.
Mandore Gardens : Mandore is an ancient city and was the seat of the Mandavyapura Pratiharas, who ruled the area in the sixth century CE. Even after the Gurjara-Pratihara Empire had disintegrated, a Pratihara family continued to rule at Mandore. This family formed an alliance with Chief Rao Chunda of Rathore to protect their chiefdom against Delhi Sultanate Tughluq dynasty. Rao Chunda married Mandore’s Pratihara princess and received the Junagarh Fort in dowry; the Fort was the capital of his family until 1459 CE when Rao Jodha transferred it to Jodhpur’s newly founded city.
Clock Tower : Ghanta Ghar was built by the Jodhpur Late Shri Sardar Singh Ji. Adjacent to the tower is the Sadar Market, frequented on a shopping spree by travelers. Sightseers can purchase Rajasthani materials, clay dolls, miniature camels and elephants, marble inlay work, and silver jewelry from this market.
